Once you make a decision, the universe conspires to make it happen. – Ralph Waldo Emerson

An affirmation is a positive sentence that asserts and celebrates what you want to achieve in your life. By affirming a positive outcome and believing it to be so, you draw it into your life.

How do affirmations work? Your life and experiences are shaped by how you think. Vedanta tells us that the world outside does not have a consciousness of its own. It is merely a mirror that reflects the consciousness that is functioning through our thoughts. Since the world is only a mirror, it brings you exactly what you think about, whether positive or negative. This is why it is important to know how to write an affirmation. After all, no one wants to attract painful or unhappy experiences.

Now, why write an affirmation? Why not repeat it only in your mind? When you have a specific goal, it is essential that you affirm the things that will help you achieve what you want, or anything better. Writing down an affirmation helps you gain clarity on what you really want. It takes the thoughts that are floating in your mind and puts them down on paper where you can actually see them. You can tweak the words until you are satisfied that your affirmation accurately reflects your goal. Then, you can repeat it verbally and in your mind many times throughout the day.

The 5 elements of a good affirmation

To ensure that your affirmation attracts what you truly want, it must be:

  • Present
  • Positive
  • Personal
  • Visual
  • Emotional

Present: Your affirmation must be a statement of what is, and not what you want in the future. So, you should say, I have found an apartment in the city; instead of, I will find an apartment in the city

Positive: Make sure that you say what you want instead of saying what you don’t want. Say, I have found a reasonably priced apartment in the city vs. I don’t want an expensive apartment.

Personal: Your affirmation should assert a positive outcome for you, and not your wishes for someone else. So, you would not say, My daughter has found a reasonably priced apartment in the city.

Visual: The more visual details you add to your affirmation, the easier it becomes to manifest in your life. I have found a reasonably priced, fully furnished apartment in the city with quiet neighbours, and a beautiful view of the water.

Emotional: This is the last, but the most powerful element of your affirmation. Adding emotions to your affirmation will get you excited about what you want. Strong, positive emotions quickly attract your dreams to you.

To make my affirmations fun to look at as well as emotionally charged, I write them with coloured markers, add exclamation marks, draw smiley faces and add ‘thank you-s’ to the universe for bringing me what I want.

Here’s what you could say:

Thank youuu Universe!! I have easily found an amazingly affordable, beautifully furnished apartment in the cityI Yay!! I have oh-so-quiet neighbours, HUGE windows with the most SPECTACULAR view of the water!! I am absolutely delighted with my new home!! (smiley face).

Affirmations for all aspects of your life

Aside from using affirmations to manifest things that you want, you can use them to attract good health, a sense of safety and well-being, building faith and for any of your other good desires. By ‘good’ I mean, desires that do not wish harm or loss to others.

For healing: I happily trust and allow the benevolent intelligence within my cells to transmute all lower vibrations to high, loving vibrations. I am thrilled with the amazing results and filled with immense gratitude and peace. Thank you!!

For safety and well-being: I am always safe and protected in the powerful and divine light of love.

Decision-making: I happily hear and heed divine guidance. It enables me to make the highest and best choices in my day, everyday!

To manifest a great day: Thank you for a wonderfully, fruitful, happy and productive day!!

For everyday guidance: Thank you God, for enabling me to easily write this useful blog post on affirmations! :)

I’m sure you get the idea. Try crafting your own affirmations using the five elements I’ve shared here. You’ll be surprised at the results!
